Stay Warm This Winter

Chicago's winters are legendary for their brutality. With the "Polar Vortex" bringing temperatures below -20°F and wind chills even colder, reliable heat is absolutely essential. We've identified buildings with zero heat violations so you can find an apartment where you'll stay warm all winter.

Chicago Heat Requirements

By law, Chicago landlords must provide heat from September 15 to June 1:

  • Daytime (8:30 AM - 10:30 PM): Minimum 68°F inside
  • Nighttime (10:30 PM - 8:30 AM): Minimum 66°F inside
  • Hot Water: Must be available 24/7 at minimum 120°F

What to Do If You Lose Heat

  1. Contact your landlord immediately (document the time and method)
  2. If no response within 24 hours, call 311 to file a complaint
  3. Document temperatures with photos showing thermometer readings
  4. In emergencies, Chicago may provide space heaters or emergency shelter

Tips for Apartment Hunting

  • Ask about the building's heating system (boiler age, last maintenance)
  • Check if heat is included in rent or separate
  • Look for newer windows and good insulation
  • Ask current tenants about their experience in winter
